Officers and Committee
Our committee is a volunteer team with a broad range of skills and experience, all freely contributed to help the club run well. From organising sessions and supporting members to managing communication, records, finances, scoring, and standards of play, the committee works to meet our regulatory and NZ Bridge requirements while keeping the club friendly, fair, and enjoyable. As in bridge, we may not always bid the perfect contract, but we are committed to keeping the club in good shape.
President
Janice Gillam
A retired business and systems analyst with a background in business transformation, organisational development, and coaching, Janice brings strong governance, systems thinking, and management skills to the committee. Her experience helps support a well-run, member-focused club that meets the Societies Act and NZ Bridge standards in today’s more regulated environment. She particularly enjoys playing with newer and less experienced members, helping them discover the tactical side of bridge: vulnerability, judgement, and the occasional joy of stealing a better player’s contract. Seeing that moment of realisation, and the confidence it brings, is one of her great pleasures at the table. These days, she applies her analytical skills to bridge hands rather than business processes. Janice’s humour, like her bidding, is occasionally questioned by partner, rarely dull, and best judged after the final trick has been played.
Vice President
Mary McQuoid
A retired Apple Distinguished Educator, Mary brings senior management experience, ongoing involvement with Apple’s developer community, invaluable IT skills, and exceptional attention to detail to the committee.
Used to coordinating people, systems, and priorities, Mary has a practical understanding of what it takes to keep an organisation running smoothly.
Mary has already rebuilt the club’s network, eliminating drop-outs and slow tablets, and brings the same can-do approach to everything she tackles. Having taken up bridge only in recent years, Mary offers a valuable newer-player perspective, helping us keep training welcoming, practical, and member-focused.
Renowned for her energy and enthusiasm, she appears to have only two speeds: fast and faster.
Secretary
Cath Boughtwood
Hard-working, diligent, and known for her integrity, Cath plays a key role in keeping the club’s administration on track.
As Secretary, she manages correspondence and ensures our meetings and minutes meet the requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act and our responsibilities as an affiliated bridge club.
Cath is also a central member of the executive team, leads our scoring system team, and oversees their training. Away from bridge, she is an expert quilter and teacher; at the bridge table, although currently a Junior player, she is already enjoying much success; watch this space!
Treasurer
Amanda Richards
A qualified and practising bookkeeper with a degree in computer science, Amanda brings exactly the sort of financial, analytical, and practical skills every club hopes to have in a Treasurer. Known for willingly taking on tasks well beyond the balance sheet, she is a steady and capable presence on the committee. Away from the accounts, she is devoted to her Labrador; at the bridge table, she enjoys trying new conventions with partner; usually, it must be said, to very good effect!
Ex Officio
Caroline Goodall
Our former President, Life Member, and one of the club’s longest-serving members, Caroline brings experience, continuity, and an outstanding record of service. Her legendary work ethic and “heart of gold” are seen in the countless acts of kindness she offers members in need. An experienced caterer and high-calibre chef, she has provided the club its North Shore reputation for excellent afternoon teas. Plain-speaking, practical, and a regular Club Director and successful tournament player; she brings both skill and character to the table. Names may occasionally emerge in a creative order, and a friendly penalty double is never far away; throughout, her commitment to the club is unmistakable.
Judith Hollyer
Committee Member
A retired teacher, former Club President, and much-valued committee member, Judith brings intelligence, patience, and a strong sense of what matters to the club. She helps deliver beginner and improver lessons, mentors newer players, and is always generous with her time and encouragement. Judith also produces the club newsletter, keeping members informed and connected, and is never afraid to stand up for what she believes is important. She does a great deal for the club, much of it with the steady patience of a natural teacher, and is rightly regarded as one of our treasures.
Bronwyn Walker
Committee Member
Bronwyn brings strong relationship management skills, excellent organisational ability, and a wonderfully practical approach to the committee. As Tournament Secretary, she plays a key role in helping our events run smoothly, calmly managing the many details that sit behind a successful tournament. A born organiser, she is also a familiar and willing helper at social events, often stepping in wherever something needs doing. Family is important to Bronwyn, and she is just as willing to help there too, including regular dog-sitting duties. Modest by nature, she may not seek the spotlight, but her contribution is felt across the club.
Dawn Pengelly
Committee Member
A retired bank employee, Dawn brings financial common sense, people skills, and a sharp eye for detail to the committee. She is involved in buying and stocktaking, serves on both the social and catering subcommittee and the main committee, and has a useful knack for spotting issues before they become problems. Family comes first for Dawn, closely followed by bridge, baking, and time spent with her husband enjoying hot rods and classic cars. Her cakes and cookies are already firm favourites at the club, proving that attention to detail is just as valuable in the kitchen as it is around the committee table.
Paul Duffy
Committee Member
A retired Chartered Engineer and professional Project Manager, Paul brings serious experience in leading complex projects and high-performing teams, with an impressive list of awards in both the UK and New Zealand. As our resident UK Northerner, Manchester United loyalist, and sole male committee member, he adds structure, straight talking, and a useful dose of perspective to the team. His focus on financial planning, new player development, and practical implementation makes him a valuable sounding board for new ideas. Paul also initiated the club manual and is a careful custodian of the policies and procedures that help the club run well. Detail matters to Paul, whether it is project planning, bridge development, or the perfect pour behind the bar, where he is deservedly popular.
Jane Sutton
Committee Member
Jane brings business know-how, strong organisational and project management skills, and a friendly, energetic approach to the committee. With experience in logistics and health and safety, she has taken a leading role in managing the club’s maintenance, procurement, and health and safety processes, helping keep the practical side of the club running safely and efficiently. Although she works full time, Jane is generous with her time and energy, while still making the most of Tuesday and Thursday evening sessions to develop her own bridge skills. Away from bridge, she has no shortage of interests, including animals, her cat, a borrowed horse, golf, horse riding, boating, and travel. In short, if something needs organising, checking, sourcing, fixing, or following up, Jane is very likely already on it.
Stephanie Bate
Committee Member
Steph is a self-employed Asset Finance Broker with 24 years’ experience and a recent move into her Head Office management team. Her fast-paced, deadline-driven work calls for strong organisation, sound judgement, and the ability to keep many moving parts under control, skills she brings to the main committee, our Learning and Development subcommittee, and Sunday tournaments.
Having returned to regular bridge in the last three years, Steph understands the value of making the game accessible to people with busy lives. Tuesday and Thursday night bridge are a welcome fixture in her week, and she is keen to encourage beginners and others who may not yet have discovered the game. Away from work and bridge, she enjoys time with friends, her son, her dog, and house projects, because apparently sitting still was never really the plan.
